The first film featuring the wildly popular Barbie doll originated from a two-part TV mini-series, Barbie and the Rockers: Out of this World. The two 25-minute segments were combined to create the final release.
The animated feature was in collaboration with the same-named Mattel line of dolls, in which Barbie fronts a rock band. After a hugely successful world tour, Barbie and the Rockers, in a world peace promotion, stage a concert in space. The idea is Barbie's, and although the rest of the band is initially skeptical, they eventually agree, and are soon zooming off to the space station to perform. Sharon Lewis provides the voice of Barbie, while the soundtrack features some interesting covers of songs by The Beatles, the Lovin' Spoonful and the Dave Clark Five.
